Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan,
the greatest exponent of qawaali of the century.
He is the person whose music comes straight from the heart &
has a feel of another world.
His presentation, gayaki & use of taans is uncomparable.
Born on 13th October 1948 in Lyallpur
(renamed FAISALABAD), Pakistan, Khan sahib is one of the most popular
singers in the Indian subcontinent.
He predominantly sang qawwali, the music of devotional Sufism, but
also experimented in other forms of music to form a unique style
that appealed to followers of all religions. In 1971, Nusrat took
over from his father (Ustad Fateh Ali Khan).
He soon captured millions of hearts & such was his popularity
with the stars of the movies that in 1979 he was invited to sing
at the wedding of Rishi, son of actor & director Raj Kapoor,
in front of the prominent members of the Bombay film industry.
His style of music also inspired several western musicians &
they experimented with fusion music under his guidance.
Peter Gabriel's admiration of
Nusrat's singing resulted in several memorable projects on the Virgin
and Real World Records label, recorded in England.
For Mustt Mustt, Nusrat worked
with experimental composer, Michael Brook
in an attempt to give his sound a western orientation.
His music, for me is divine as it has the fragrance of love &
purity in it.
It appeals & reaches the heart of every common man cause he
renders his compositions with so much love, dedication & affection
towards almighty.
His sudden death on 16th August 1997 robbed
the world of one of its finest voices.
I wish he had lived some years more to enrich us with his uncomparable
music. He is still with us in his unforgettable numbers.
As a true fan of the
maestro, I would like his music to be heard every where.
And you will be surprised to know that some of his works are also
used in meditations as it brings peace & relaxation. You will
also feel this as you go deep into it.
I really learned
a lot about sargam, lay & taal by only listening to his works
of different styles. And I am really thankful to the almighty who
gave me the opportunity of meeting him, on 9th Janaury 1996 at his
live show in New Delhi.
